چکیده

Eagon, R. G. (University of Georgia, Athens), and H. W. Cho. Major products of glucose dissimilation by Pseudomonas natriegens. J. Bacteriol. 89:1209-1211. 1965.-Pseudomonas natriegens aerobically catabolized glucose to yield predominantly acetic acid, pyruvic acid, and CO(2), whereas little or no lactic acid was formed. Under anaerobic conditions, glucose in an enriched medium was fermented to yield acetic acid and lactic acid but no pyruvic acid or CO(2). Glucose in a basal salts medium was fermented to yield predominantly acetic acid, lactic acid, and CO(2), while small amounts of pyruvic acid were detected. It was suggested that the aerobic accumulation of acidic products results from rapid glucose dissimilation to the oxidation level of pyruvic acid, followed by a less rapidly functioning tricarboxylic acid cycle.

Walker, Hazel (University of Georgia, Athens), and R. G. Eagon. Lactic dehydrogenases of Pseudomonas natriegens. J. Bacteriol. 88:25-30. 1964.-Lactic dehydrogenases specific for d- and l-lactate were demonstrated in Pseudomonas natriegens. The l-lactic dehydrogenase showed considerable heat stability, and 40% of the activity remained in extracts after heating at 60 C for 10 min. An essential th...

Dissimilation of C14-labeled glucose by Serratia marcescens.

Glucose containing radioactive carbon has been utilized in the study of the metabolic distribution of the various carbon atoms during dissimilation by the following organisms: Leuconostoc mesenteroides, (Gunsalus and Gibbs, J. Biol. Chem. 194, 871, 1952); Pseudomonas saccharophila, (Entner and Doudoroff, J. Biol. Chem. 196, 853, 1952); Pseudomonas fluorescens (Lewis et al., J. Biol. Chem., 216,...

Evidence for alternate pathways for the oxidation of glucose by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Species of Pseudomonas accumulate gluconic and 2-ketogluconic acids when grown in a medium containing glucose (Norris and Campbell, 1949; Stubbs et al., 1940; Entner and Stanier, 1951). In addition, cell-free preparations of these organisms will convert glucose to 2-ketogluconic acid (Wood and Schwerdt, 1953; Claridge and Werkman, 1953). These reactions suggest a pathway for the dissimilation o...

Anaerobic dissimilation of C14-labeled glucose and fructose by Pseudomonas lindneri.

Ethanol formation during the heterolactic fermentation of glucose by Leuconostoc me$enteroides has been shown to proceed via a pathway differing from the Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas glycolysis scheme (1-3). Ethanol arising during yeast fermentation via the Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas scheme is derived from carbon atoms 1 (aldehyde carbon), 2, 5, and 6 of glucose (4), the methyl group representing carbons...

The Mechanism of the Butanol-acetone Fermentation

The question whether pyruvic acid holds a key position as an intermediate in the butanol-acetone fermentation by Clostridium acetobutylicum (Weizmann) similar to that in the alcoholic fermentation by yeast and in glycolysis by muscle has, so far, not received a decisive answer. This is mainly due to the inconsistent results obtained by different workers in this field. As in the case of corn-mea...
